The Beatitudes of Broadway: Into the Woods

“Once upon a time,” the beginning of many a bedtime story, is also the beginning of the 1987 Broadway musical “Into the Woods,” the second subject of this year’s revival of “The Beatitudes of Broadway” at Virginia-Highland Church. The Tony Award-winning show, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, combines the familiar stories of Jack and the beanstalk, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel with the newly-created tale of a childless baker and his wife, desperate to become parents, into a story of deceit, dreams, wishes, death, deception, magic, and (almost) happily ever after. Watch and listen to find out what the still-speaking God has to say through this inventive interweaving.
